I found this really good article from Eat to Perform.
Here are some bullet points:
- Weighing your food: when starting off you should weigh your food. You DON’T have to do it for the rest of your life, but do it for like a month to see where you are at calories wise. You would be surprised at how many calories you are taking in or not taking in for that matter. That seems to be my problem…. I don’t eat enough good calories to perform the best in the gym.
- Lose fat vs weight– You want to lose fat not necessarily weight. Muscles do have a weight to them… a good weight that is!!
- Why Protein/ carbs and fat (macro-nutrients are important)- Protein intake will influence lean mass (muscle) retention on a diet. Good carbs are for energy. Fat is necessary to build cell walls, produce hormones, and transport fat soluble vitamins.
- Best exercise– To preserve muscle is resistance training.
